UAMFT Licensing Information

This page is for people who are interested in licensing as a
Marriage and Family Therapist in Utah

Licensing is conducted through Utah's Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. The Division carries out all laws and rules related to professional licensing and suggests that you refer to the state's laws and rules through their website. You should read the laws and rules for marriage and family therapists carefully and direct question to the state's licensing division. Rich Oborn (roborn@utah.gov; 801-530-6767) is quite happy to answer questions and is the best source of accurate information and interpretation of the laws and rules.

Supervision must be provided for unlicensed people as directed by the laws and rules. To find an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, use the AAMFT's
directory or the UAMFT Supervisors/Interns webpage. Supervisor candidates (those who are in the process of becoming an AAMFT Approved Supervisor) are not listed in the directory. Consult with Approved Supervisors in the general location of interest or look on Supervisors/Interns for listings of those who have taken the Fundamentals of Supervision Course and are interested in supervising Licensed Associate MFTs or externs needing supervision. Supervisors who are providing mentoring of supervisor candidates can be good resources; be sure that the candidate has completed an AAMFT-approved Fundamentals of Supervision course.

It is important to understand Utah's rules about supervision: in order for supervision and training hours to count toward licensure, the supervisor MUST:
1. Have been licensed as an MFT for at least two years.
2. Be licensed in the state in which the training is taking place.
3. Be either an AAMFT Approved Supervisor (not supervisor candidate) OR have completed an AAMFT-approved Fundamenatals of Supervision course.

Licensed Associate MFTs should get documentation that their supervisors are either AAMFT designated supervisors or have completed a supervision course approved by AAMFT. The laws and rules as well as application and contact information can be found by clicking the DOPL link below.

You also can look on the UAMFT's Job Opportunities webpage for agencies that are willing to hire interns. Many of these agencies provide supervision or are willing to work with interns on securing supervisors.
