Living On The Razor's Edge: Strengths-Based Brief Family Therapy With Self-Injuring Adolescents

Working with self-injuring and suicidal adolescents can be a therapist’s worst nightmare. Self-injuring behavior alone is perplexing, is often a hidden practice, and can serve many functions for these adolescents in helping them to better cope with emotional distress and major stressors in their lives. Additionally, many self-injurers symptom switch back and forth from self-injuring to eating-distressed behaviors like bulimia to substance abuse. Often, they come from families where they have experienced a great deal of emotional invalidation and disconnection and in some cases, trauma. The longer the career of self-injurers, the higher the risk for suicide attempts, since they have conquered their fear of death. There are often early warning signs, triggering events, and clear red flags for an adolescents’ being at high risk for a suicide attempts, which we will cover in this workshop.
As a result of attending this “hands-on” practice-oriented workshop, participants will come away with the following knowledge and skills:
- The latest research findings on what works with self-injuring and suicidal adolescents.
- Effective alliance-building strategies with self-injuring and suicidal adolescents.
- Major red-flags for assessing adolescents being at risk for a suicide attempt.
- Overview of Collaborative Strengths-Based Brief Family Therapy
- Effective parenting strategies for self-injuring adolescents
- Key assessment, goal-setting, and other strengths-based therapeutic questions to elicit client expertise.
